COSMETIC CLINIC

 What are they?

Skin resurfacers and peels have been used since ancient Egypt to help exfoliate, tighten and thicken the skin by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Anyone who wishes to have a chemical resurfacer/peel should have a consultation with a trained practitioner prior to booking so you can speak about your ‘problem areas’ and then together, we can advise the right course of treatment for your skin type and condition. A resurfacer/peel candidate may have concerns such as the following:

Ageing;
Photo-Damage;
Pigmentation;
Oily Skin;
Acne;
Acne Scars (Medium depth peels only).

 General complexion improvement.

Our professional chemical skin resurfacing and peel treatments from Dermaquest  contain acids naturally derived from sour milk, sugar cane , pumpkins and wintergreen. We use acids in varying strengths to suit all skin types and conditions from sensitive to acneic and young to more mature skin.

We are also trained to provide information on, and treatment of medium strength  resurfacers/peels. Depending on the depth of the treatment prescribed, a course is recommended to improve the complexion by concentrating on colour, texture, brightness, elasticity, pigmentation, acne and acne scarring, and photo damage.

The recovery period for our stronger resurfacers/peels is usually 7 days and during this time you will be able to go out and continue work after the initial redness has subsided. We advise and will prescribe a homecare programme of products to help you and your skin achieve the best results but more importantly protect your skin from the sun and harsh environment.

 What are they used to treat?

By combining the acids of glycolic, lactic and salicylic your face can be treated holistically for various skin conditions. Peels and resurfacing treatments are used to deeply exfoliate all layers of the skin, refine the appearance of wrinkles and even skin tone and lighten pigmentation. They also stimulate collagen production, reduce pore size and improve the hydration of the skin. They can be very effective in reducing visible acne scarring, and can even be beneficial in treating active acne. Chemical peels are very prescriptive and your nurse will advise on the strength, type of acid and number of treatments required to achieve your expectations.

Our skin is designed to naturally exfoliate every 28 days. With age this process slows down and our skin cells become lazy. To keep skin looking healthy and youthful it is important to re-stimulate the skin. Optimum, healthy skin is only achieved when the outer layer of your skin, which you can touch, is relatively thin. A healthy epidermis comprises of smooth, soft, living cells, whilst the inner layer that is made up of three quarters collagen needs to be plump and thick to maintain tone and prevent the signs of ageing skin.

 How do they work?

Once the resurfacing treatment is applied to the face it effectively removes the dead cells from the surface and penetrates deep into the layers of the skin where hair follicles, sebaceous glands and collagen are present. A chemical peel can involve dissolving the very top layers of the skin and may require creams to use at home for a short period after to aid the healing process and regenerate your new healthy, skin. A chemical peel can be suitable for most skin types and ages as long as it is prescriptive and followed with good aftercare. Dependant on the strength of the acid 1 to 2 weeks down time maybe experienced and we can plan your diary with you – this is only with top level chemical peel treatments of 50% and above.

 How is it performed?

Following initial consultation it maybe necessary for you to undertake a 2 week skin preparation using homecare Dermaquest products to ensure your skin is correctly balanced in order you get the best results following the treatment.

On the day of treatment your nurse will prepare the skin by cleansing before applying the chosen peel . This is then left on the skin for between 5 -10 minutes after which either another layer of acid is applied or the peel is removed and the skin is then soothed. Professional products are applied to the skin and aftercare advice will be given.

If the skin is not correctly cared for following a chemical peel there is a risk that problems such as scarring, hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation can occur.

 How long will it last?

Once you have completed your course of treatments a monthly maintenance programme will be designed for you to ensure the results last for many months. Using the recommended homecare products will prolong and enhance the results of any professional treatment. A top level chemical peel may only be required once in a 12 month period and thereafter more mild treatments can be prescribed to maintain the health and look of your new skin.

 What are the risks?

No treatment can be guaranteed to present ‘no risk’. Our Cosmetic Nurses rarely see any a problem following our peels as a thorough analysis of the skin is performed prior to treatment so to avoid any unwanted side effects, such as scarring or pigmentation. It is important you follow the pre-treatment programme and aftercare.

Are there any special pre-cautions before undergoing the treatment?

Prior to a peel you will be expected to prepare your skin by using the recommended homecare products for two weeks. This will ensure that your skin responds most effectively and your recovery time is minimal.
